One of the first places we wanted to see was the Dole Pineapple Plantation. And it was literally the first place we went to - a bit too early. They weren't quite open yet, so we only got to walk around the grounds, but that was fun anyway. And for the short time we spent there, we took a LOT of pictures. This isn't even half of them - just the most interesting ones!
One thing that thrilled Winston was all the wild chickens wandering about. We saw quite a few in Oahu, but even more in Kauai. They're just everywhere. Tom was talking to a kayaking guide about it and was told that the chickens used to be domestic until a hurricane hit the islands many years ago. Ever since then they've had an over-abundance of wild chickens. It seems to add some character to the place. Winston thought it was great!

The boys standing in front of some sugar cane. We didn't get to try any during the vacation. I saw some for sale in a grocery store, but the price was pretty steep. These guys didn't need a sugar rush anyway.
Here Keaton is trying to feed a hen and her chicks. He's not having much success. They probably know that it's just a tree leaf and not a french fry that he's holding out there. Maybe chickens are smarter than they want us to think they are.

Notice the red dirt. LOTS of red dirt. Sometimes it looked like we were driving around on Mars. The dirt from the back country roads coat everything next to the roads in a layer of red dust - trees, sidewalks, road signs... everything.

The gardens were really pretty. When they're open there is a pinapple maze that you can walk through and a train ride that takes you through more of the gardens and into the actual plantation - for a fee of course. I'd like to go back some time and go through their store.
After this we headed off to the North Shore - famous for surfing competitions.
